During their stay, one of the locals asked Elizabeth how many doctors worked alongside her at the hospital. When she replied she was the only doctor there, he announced, 'You are very brave man.' 'I know you are a woman, but in Nepal all women are men - able and weak. This is why I call you a brave man.' This compilation of her letters home to New Zealand and her journal entries is a fascinating account of that bravery: battling the cold, culture shock, poor facilities, unfamiliar ailments and a chauvinistic society.
