Synopsis:
For some, the Portuguese village of Mamarrosa is a place from which to escape; for others it is a place to run from trouble. Vasco, a cafe owner who has never recovered from the death of his wife, clings to a notion that his years in the USA make him superior to the other villagers. One English tourist makes Mamarrosa the subject of her fantasy of a new life, while for a young engaged couple, it is where their dreams finally fall apart. At the book's opening an old man reflects on his life in this seemingly tranquil setting, and anticipates the return of Marco Afonso Rodrigues, the prodigal son of the village. When he does finally appear, villagers, tourists and expatriates are brought together, and their passions and disappointments must inevitably collide.
The Bookworms Mission:
We strive to reduce unnecessary landfill by taking used books, second-hand books, paperback books, hardback books, pre-loved books, great reads and recycled books and then redistributing them throughout New Zealand, Australia and the rest of the world. Readers can connect online with book titles, helping them find new homes, and support reusing and re-loving books that are affordable. At Bookworms you’ll find cheap books, hidden gems and even some lost treasures. We have a passion for sustainability, being eco-friendly, eco-conscious and we aim to incorporate that into all that we do.
