You don't get to play 75 tests for the All Blacks - only Sean Fitzpatrick has played more - without being alert, astute, intelligent and utterly dedicated. Now lan Jones, Kamo to all colleagues, brings those same qualities to his autobiography which promises to rank as one of the more significant works of rugby literature published in New Zealand. There hasn't been anything happen in New Zealand rugby over the past decade that Jones hasn't been privy to or intimately involved in. And it's all vividly presented in this book masterfully crafted by the nation's leading rugby writer Bob Howitt. Jones tells how as the lone Northlander he was virtually ostracised by the powerful Auckland element when he first entered the international scene, the same forces that squeezed Buck Shelford out as captain and militated against Alex Wyllie. He identifies the strengths and weaknesses of coaches Alex Wyllie and Laurie Mains, the men of the amateur era, and of the more entrepreneurial John Hart, whose arrival coincided with the advent of professionalism. Touring under Hart, Jones says, is like being on a month-long man management and motivational course. The full story of New Zealand's bid for World Cup supremacy in 1995, which foundered in extra time in the final, is dramatically captured by Jones who then reveals the full details – for the first time, from the All Blacks' viewpoint – of the amazing WRC saga as rugby prepared to go professional. Jones reports first hand on the stresses involved in having to appear before rugby's judiciary and presents vivid portraits of such icons as Buck Shelford, Sean Fitzpatrick, Zinzan Brooke and Colin Meads. This is an honest, revealing, amusing book providing a fascinating insight into the world's most successful rugby team.
